Children's Dentistry in Fairfax, VA

child brushing his teeth in fairfax vaChildren have unique needs for their developing smiles! Dr. Jennifer loves working with children, making it easy for busy families to get all their dental care done in one convenient location.

We encourage parents to bring their little ones in when their first teeth arrive but no later than their first birthday. This may seem early, but it’s never too soon to start building a rapport with your child to monitor their oral development and help them feel safe and comfortable when they visit the dentist. Early visits set children up for successful dental appointments in the future.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

When you bring your baby in to see our team at Tummarello & Pandak Family Dentistry, we’ll take plenty of time to ensure they feel welcome and at ease. They can sit on your lap as we count and examine their baby teeth.

They should come every six months for checkups just like their parents do, and the first few visits are primarily about helping them acclimate to their dental checkups.

Dental Care for Developing Smiles

As they grow, we’ll incorporate teeth cleanings into their appointments with the “tell, show, do” method. We tell your child about the procedure, show them the tools we use, and then proceed with the treatment only when they feel comfortable.

Dr. Jennifer may recommend additional services for your little one as they grow, such as fluoride treatments to strengthen their developing teeth and dental sealants to protect them from decay and cavities.

We'll also suggest a custom mouthguard for kids participating in sports. Custom mouthguards better protect your child's smile than store-bought guards that may be ill-fitting.

How to Care for Your Baby’s Teeth at Home

Did you know oral care begins before your baby’s first teeth erupt? Parents can start wiping their baby’s gums with a warm washcloth after feedings to reduce bacteria buildup in their mouth.

When their first teeth come in, parents can begin daily brushing with a soft-bristled infant toothbrush. This helps your little one get used to having a toothbrush in their mouth. You can also use a tiny, pea-sized smear of toothpaste that’s safe to swallow. You can start using fluoride toothpaste once your child learns to spit, which is around the age of three.

Children will need help and supervision with brushing and flossing their teeth until around age seven or eight.
